Bajrang Baan: Complete Lyrics, Meaning & When Devotees Read It

Most people who know both the Hanuman Chalisa and the Bajrang Baan will tell you the same thing: they feel different to recite.

The Chalisa is something you return to every morning. It’s familiar, devotional, settled. The Bajrang Baan (बजरंग बाण) is something you reach for when things get serious.

The word Baan (बाण) means arrow — swift, direct, and aimed at a specific target. That word choice was deliberate. This prayer was not written for general devotion. It was written for urgency.

Who Wrote It and When?

Like the Hanuman Chalisa, the Bajrang Baan is attributed to Goswami Tulsidas. It appears in his Vinay Patrika (विनय पत्रिका) — a collection of devotional prayers composed in Braj Bhasha and Awadhi during his later years in Varanasi. Scholars date the Vinay Patrika to approximately 1582–1585 CE, which means the Bajrang Baan came after the Hanuman Chalisa.

Where the Chalisa is a complete devotional portrait of Hanuman Ji, the Bajrang Baan is more like a direct petition — an appeal to Hanuman’s power on behalf of someone in immediate need. The tone is more urgent, more specific, more demanding in the devotional sense.

When Do Devotees Read the Bajrang Baan?

Traditionally, the Bajrang Baan is not a prayer of daily routine. Devotees reach for it during:

  • Periods of intense fear or danger — physical, legal, or spiritual
  • Situations involving negative energy or what tradition calls buri nazar (बुरी नज़र) — evil eye or ill-will from others
  • Serious illness that isn’t responding to treatment
  • Recurring bad luck or patterns that seem to have no rational explanation
  • When enemies — personal or professional — are actively causing harm

Some traditions advise that the Bajrang Baan should be read with specific intent and complete sincerity, and not interrupted once started. The idea is that you’re directing Hanuman Ji’s power at something specific, which requires focused attention rather than routine recitation.

A Note About How It’s Used

Some people read the Bajrang Baan every day alongside the Chalisa. Others reserve it strictly for difficult periods. Both approaches exist within the tradition, and both are valid.

What most experienced practitioners agree on: approach it with specific intent when you read it. The Chalisa can be a morning routine. The Bajrang Baan benefits from you knowing exactly why you’re reading it on any given day.

The Bajrang Baan is the prayer I have reached for during my most difficult moments, not the Chalisa, which I reserve for the daily rhythm of my life. There is a difference in how they feel, and this article tries to explain that difference honestly. Understanding when and why to use the Bajrang Baan matters more than simply having its text.
